Aveng hosted a prize-giving ceremony at the Jane Furse Comprehensive School in Jane Furse, Limpopo on Thursday, 2 February 2017. The event was attended by representatives from the Limpopo Department of Education together with the Local Mayor for the Sekhukhune District Municipality, Cllr M. Bahula and the Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality, Cllr Keamotseng Stanley Ramaila who delivered the keynote address. The prize giving acknowledged the excellent achievements of 2016 matric learners from the Aveng-sponsored Rebone Kutlwanong Centre.
The Rebone Kutlwanong maths and science centre provides tuition to 480 learners from 20 feeder schools. Kutlwanong is a non-profit organisation that aims to improve the performance of high school maths and science learners from disadvantaged areas. The project strives to facilitate entrance to tertiary education and successful bursary applications for as many learners as possible. The organisation has centres across the country and has managed to consistently achieve outstanding results since it was launched in 2005.
The Aveng Rebone Kutlwanong Centre is among the top three performing Kutlwanong Centres nationwide and has received recognition and support from the Department of Education. The centre has also consistently produced exemplary matric results well above the national average. Key highlights from the 2016 matric results include a pass rate of 100%, with 51 distinctions in physical science, 41 distinctions in mathematics, and 39 learners who were awarded distinctions in both maths and physical science.

This focus allows Aveng to contribute towards employment creation by increasing the pool of relevant engineering and technical skills, while simultaneously benefitting disadvantaged communities, our industry and the South African economy at large,” said Solly Letsoalo, Chairperson of the Aveng Community Investment Trust.Kutlwanong Centre CEO, Tumelo Mabitsela added: “Congratulations to the class of 2016. You truly made us proud. This year’s matric results are commendable and are testament to the hard work of the learners and educators who dedicated many hours for the pursuit of educational excellence. I wish the class of 2016 all the best with the next chapter of your lives. May you continue to excel and prioritise education in the pursuit of a successful future in order to participate meaningfully in our economy."
