Aveng hosted a prize-giving ceremony at Photo Primary School in Jane Furse, Limpopo on Friday, 2 February 2018. The prize-giving acknowledged the excellent achievements of the 2017 Grade 12 learners from the Aveng-sponsored Kutlwanong Maths, Science and Technology Centre.
The Aveng Kutlwanong Centre is among the top three performing Kutlwanong Centres nationwide, consistently producing exemplary results well above the national average. Key highlights from the 2017 Grade 12 year include a pass rate of 98%, with 16 learners achieving five distinctions or more. Of the 149 Grade 12 learners from the Centre who sat for the final exams, 95 learners were awarded distinctions in both maths and physical science (52 distinctions in physical science, 43 distinctions in maths).
Furthermore, 83% of learners achieved Bachelor passes, 11% passed with Diploma and 3% with Higher Certificates. This means that 140 candidates (94%) who achieved Bachelor and Diploma passes are eligible to register for studies at higher education institutions while the four candidates who obtained Higher Certificate passes may register at TVET colleges and other skills training institutions.
There was an overall improvement in the percentage of learners who achieved decent passes (50 – 100%) in maths and physical science, an increase in the percentage of learners who achieved distinctions in these subjects and an improvement in the percentage of learners who qualify for Bachelor’s studies.
“The outstanding results achieved by the Grade 12 learners at the Aveng-sponsored Kutlwanong Centre reaffirm our commitment to the long-term success of this programme. Not only is it clearly having a positive impact on the performance of learners in previously disadvantaged communities, but it is also contributing to the improvement of maths and physical science, which are two subjects critical to the development of the scarce resources so desperately needed for the growth and development of our country,” said Dr Poobie Pillay, Aveng’s Group Transformation & Procurement Executive and Chairperson of the Aveng Community Investment Trust.
As part of the prize-giving, Aveng handed out 12 laptops to the top performing learners. The company is also making four bursaries available to students wishing to study in the engineering field and candidates will be evaluated for suitability before the bursaries are awarded.
Kutlwanong’s CEO, Tumelo Mabitsela, added: “The Kutlwanong programme was prompted by the difficulties experienced by learners from disadvantaged communities to access studies in the fields of engineering, medicine and actuarial science, amongst others, at institutions of higher learning. Our success can largely be attributed to our dedicated educators and committed learners who give up their free time to attend classes over the weekend and during school holidays.”
The Aveng Kutlwanong Maths, Science and Technology Centre provides extra tuition to 480 Grade 10 – 12 learners from 22 feeder schools. Kutlwanong is a non-profit organisation that aims to improve the performance of learners from disadvantaged areas who are studying maths and science. The programme strives to facilitate entrance to tertiary education and successful bursary applications for as many learners as possible.
